Looking for a unique way to spend the day on Cape Cod? The Sandwich Glass Museum, located in downtown Sandwich, is a great spot to learn local history while seeing some amazing art being created!
Did you know that Sandwich is the oldest town in Cape Cod? While the town was established in 1637, it wasn’t until 1825 that glass making became a thriving industry. According to the Sandwich Glass Museum’s website, Deming Jarves, the founder of the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company, chose Sandwich for its shallow harbor and convenient location for transporting goods. The company was well known for their lamps, candle stick holders, spoon holders, and more.
With the price of admission, visitors can travel back in time through the museum, which features a variety of collection pieces, fun facts, and historical replicas. Visitors can also view glass-making demonstrations, held every hour or so throughout the day. Using hot sand, the artists mold and shape the liquid into beautiful creations, such as vases and other fun-shaped objects. We watched in awe as the artist created an adorable cat out of glass!
If you’re looking to take home a Cape Cod souvenir, the gift shop is the perfect spot. The beautiful glasses, paperweights, and decorative items would make a great addition to any home.
The Sandwich Glass Museum is also ready for the Holidays! This year the museum has a variety of special exhibits and products available for sale. The “Glass Menagerie:A-Z” features glass animals of all sizes such as pandas, sea creatures, and more. The gift shop also has a collection of ornaments, decorative trees, and other Holiday items available for purchase.
The Sandwich Glass Museum is a great spot to visit year-round. It’s a perfect example of how beauty can come in all forms, even from precious sand!
