More About Madaket
Madaket is as far west as you can go on the island. It is on the NRTA shuttle bus line, or you can bike along the scenic, 5 1/2 mile bike path through natural vegetation. At the height of the season, Madaket Harbor is filled with small craft and fishing boats.
Madaket has a very long and narrow stretch of beach, with pounding surf and cross-currents. The western most tip of the beach is accessible only by four-wheel drive vehicles. There are some lifeguards and portable restrooms on some stretches of the beach. Those people with physical challenges need to be aware that the drop from the dunes to the beach can be steep at times. Many people think that Madaket Beach offers the most beautiful sunsets on the whole island.
Owned by the Nantucket Land Bank, the 64-acre Long Pond area is especially good for bird watching. A one-mile walking path takes you along the pond, past meadows and a natural cranberry bog.
