Mr. Vienneau has been working as a professional Scrimshander since 1974 and his artwork is in... show more The Scrimshander Gallery, located on historic Old South Wharf in Nantucket, is a destination of choice for scrimshaw collectors and art lovers alike. The gallery began in 1990 as a showcase for artist Michael Vienneau's scrimshaw, carvings and artwork. Mr. Vienneau has been working as a professional Scrimshander since 1974 and his artwork is in the finest tradition of the ancient art of scrimshaw. Michael uses antique whale’s teeth and whale bone from pre-1972 stockpiles(observing the Marine Mammals Protection Act of 1972) but also employs a wide use of fossil ivories which can be from 100 to 30,000 years old. A selection of artwork from other fine regional artists who work in scrimshaw is also available at the gallery. hide

Located at 96 Main Street, The Hadwen House is a Greek Revival mansion built in 1845 by whaling merchant and silver retailer William Hadwen. Hadwen purchased the property on the corner of Pleasant and Main in 1844, and commissioned local builder Frederick Brown Coleman to construct the two-and-a-half storied clapboard house with a five-bayed... show more Located at 96 Main Street, The Hadwen House is a Greek Revival mansion built in 1845 by whaling merchant and silver retailer William Hadwen. Hadwen purchased the property on the corner of Pleasant and Main in 1844, and commissioned local builder Frederick Brown Coleman to construct the two-and-a-half storied clapboard house with a five-bayed façade, colossal pilasters, and a pedimented ionic portico. The first floor parlors display the opulent furnishings and grand lifestyle that had come to replace the island's once dominant sober Quaker aesthetic.
