A summer vacation in Oak Bluffs is always to be enjoyed. But, a summer vacation in this gem of a Victorian has all the requirements for making memories to be treasured. Built in the 1890s as part of the Copeland district, this sun-filled home is located on the corner of Narragansett and Seaview Avenue across the street from the town beaches on the shores of Nantucket Sound.

This lovely nine-bedroom home sleeps eighteen, has expansive porches on two sides and two stories (the second-story master bedroom has its own glorious veranda), a formal dining room, a charming butler’s pantry equipped with washer and dryer, a roomy eat-in kitchen, three and a half baths, a traditional enclosed outdoor shower for rinsing off after the beach or enjoying the breeze while you lather up. This charming home with floor to ceiling windows is filled with light even on cloudy days . . . so, should the northeast wind churn up the sea, you might enjoy a respite in the glassed-in wave watchers porch.

Get together or relax with a book in one of the three spacious sitting rooms; enjoy an early morning swim with the Polar Bears at Inkwell Beach (the most welcoming group of joyful souls you’re ever likely to meet); sip coffee and rock gently on the front porch as the sun paints the sky and bursts from the sea before your very eyes--or create a lively gathering for cocktails, the constant salt-laden breeze cooling the evening hours. If you catch the calendar right, the full moon will glow on the horizon and slowly emerge to mesmerize as the earth turns.

The stunning view of the sun glistening on water scatters burdens. Spirits lifted, take in the beautiful parks planned in the 19th century to afford everyone an uninterrupted view of the sea, or enjoy other attractions built during the Victorian-era: the Flying Horses, the nation’s oldest platform carousel, or the Victorian Camp Ground cottages of the Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting Association showcasing the gingerbread-trimmed architecture of the time. Oak Bluffs is the home of the African American Heritage Trail, highlighting a proud history that few towns share.
A variety of restaurants and the night life and entertainments of “downtown” beckon. Both the Tabernacle in the Camp Grounds and the Union Chapel (historic buildings of note) host literary, musical, and topical events. Enjoy it all, then return to this welcoming house by the sea with your family and friends and rest yourself a while on the porch the way visitors have been doing for more than 130 years.
