Description

Description

This airy, light-filled and private deck house is a great retreat for a family or a group. Comfortable, unfussy furnishings and a spacious mahogany deck make this the perfect place to enjoy birdsong in the mornings and sunset views with a peek of the Vineyard Sound. Beautiful Waskosim's Rock Reservation is steps away, and passes to lovely Lucy Vincent and Squibnocket--both wild and gorgeous surf beaches--are available for purchase by presenting your lease at Chilmark town hall (or order online in advance). Play tennis on private association courts, just a short walk away. Quieter waters are available in Menemsha (great for small children) and the spectacular Great Rock Bight. Rinse off afterward in the freestanding mahogany outside shower.

The house is a midcentury modern gem with all-wood cathedral ceilings on the main level, a wall of windows and a wraparound deck. The open-floor-plan living room has a welcoming hearth (please, no fires), huge sectional, plenty of games and books, and a Smart TV (second TV downstairs). The all-new kitchen (2023) has natural soapstone countertops, Bosch stainless steel fridge and dishwasher, gas stove. It opens to a breakfast bar and dining area, with room at the table for 8.

Mini-splits provide A/C throughout for comfort in summer, and the house is fully winterized.

The bedrooms are simple and fresh. Linens are provided. One bedroom on the main level has a king bed and private bath, 3 more bedrooms (one with a King bed and two with doubles) and another bath with washer and dryer are on the lower level. Downstairs playroom has a futon couch, Smart TV and a workspace for remote workers.

Pets considered; please ask.

So many things to like about this house - location, size, layout, cleanliness, design, comfort...the deck is wonderful (with lots of deer sightings!), off the main road, but not at all remote; Super friendly and helpful property owner who was easy to get in touch with, and quick to reply.
Bedrooms are spread across two floors, so it is easy for everyone to feel they have their own space.

The house is wonderfully quiet in a peaceful neighborhood tucked away in the woods. It has a very nice deck and big open floor plan with kitchen, dining area and living room all comfortably arranged. Its an easy drive to great markets, restaurants and beaches. Great in every way!

    Wonderful Chilmark Home

We enjoyed staying at this home in July 2012. The house is in a great location off of Tea Lane, near both Lucy Vincent and Menemsha beaches while being in a very peaceful and bucolic part of the island. It's a great place from which to enjoy the serenity of Chilmark and the nearby walking trails. The house is very spacious and our entire family was comfortable throughout our stay. Our friends rented a nearby house but we could easily have them over to spend time together, watch movies or have dinner. Late afternoon and early evening meals on the outside deck were pleasant and enjoyable. There are enough beds for a larger family and two futons which can be used as beds as well. The kitchen is well supplied and the sitting and TV area are a great place to relax after an eventful day. The bedrooms are nicely set up with adequate closets and bureaus for clothing. There are many extra sheets and blankets in case you need them and the washer and dryer are handy. Due to the open floor plan upstairs in the main living area it was easy for our family to spend quality time together, but you could also find a quiet place to read or rest. Suzanne is a wonderful host and cares very much about her guests. We would highly recommend staying here for anyone who wants a "get away from it all" vacation on the Vineyard. show more show less

This house is in a beautiful part of Chilmark, off of Tea Lane...close enough to go into the towns and private enough to feel like you're totally secluded. It's within walking distance to Waskosim's Rock Reservation, with wonderful hiking trails. The house is a combination of rustic and modern with every amenity one would need. Extremely well organized and stocked, the house was immaculate when we arrived. The beds and bedding are top quality. The open layout of the house is perfect for the family to spend time together.

After the drive and then the ferry over to Martha’s Vineyard, we anticipated spending some much needed time on Island. And we were more than delighted to realize as we arrived at this lovely home in Chilmark that this was to be home base for our Anniversary vacation. The house and the amenities are everything that you can ask for in a laidback Vineyard vacation home. Beyond the location in the beautiful area off Tea Lane, the house was immaculate and the owners extremely organized as was described by another recent visitor to this lovely home. Thank you Suzanne – your home is beautiful and it was a pleasure to work with you. We look forward to our next visit to the island and again experiencing another delightful stay at your Chilmark home. M&G, Washington, DC show more show less

Stayed for a week+ in mid-July 2011. Home is clean, airy, very comfortable. Beds very nice, kitchen well-equipped, great (huge) wrap-around deck with grill, supercomfy couches and lots of room for a family to be together, or find their own space in the house. Chilmark location is wonderfully central to different parts of the island, and allows for passes to Lucy Vincent, one of the island's most gorgeous private beaches. Quite private - about a mile down a well-maintained dirt road and surrounded by quiet woods - yet it felt easy to get out and explore. Nearby: fantastic farmstands with fresh local goodies, an incredible restaurant (State Road Restaurant), hiking trails, flea markets and farmers markets, Chilmark Chocolates (yum!), and Menemsha for fresh fish and great sunsets. Owner Suzanne was delightful to work with, prompt, helpful, friendly and straightforward. Hope to stay there again soon! show more show less

This house is perfect for one large family or two small ones. An large airy open living/ dining area, and small but freshly painted bedrooms and fresh linens make it feel updated without losing the charm of its era. It was also very well maintained. We had a wonderful time in this home.

We have been staying at this house for years and have found the house clean, well maintained and comfortable. It is close to conservation trails and a short car ride to the beach. We would recommend it to friends and relatives.

I've been coming to the Island since I was a teenager. My parents built this house as a summer retreat in the 1970s, camping on the property during the early stages. It's been in the family ever since, and my husband and I have brought our children here since they were small. Now that they are grown, we stay in the house in the off-season, working remotely, and make it available to renters in the summer. We have a great team of family and professionals on the Island to assist with this rental, even when we off-Island. I'm the author of a novel for teens set on Martha's Vineyard, and recently began writing for Martha's Vineyard Magazine.

What is special about this property?
With its many floor-to-ceiling windows, the living area feels just one step from the great outdoors. The woods around the house are filled with birds and other critters, making the wraparound deck a wonderful spot for wildlife watching. The distant water view (it's just a peek) doesn't let you forget you are on an island, and the quiet, remote location in the woods of Chilmark (consider bringing an SUV; roads here are dirt) truly allow you to ''get away from it all,'' even in the height of the season. I love our new kitchen, with its organic feel and high-end appliances. Access to Chilmark's gorgeous and exclusive beaches, the peaceful and historic Waskosim's Rock Reservation and association clay tennis courts just a short walk away round out the picture. And don't forget the outside shower, a Vineyard tradition.

What is special about your town?
Beaches, nature, views, charm. Chilmark is hillier than the rest of the island, boasting numerous trails culminating in gorgeous viewpoints like Menemsha Hills and Peaked Hill. In the summer, Lucy Vincent Beach, renowned for its beauty, is open only to Chilmark homeowners and renters. There's a charming fishing village in Menemsha, and the Chilmark Store is a crossroads for Islanders and celebrities alike. Pizza on the Chilmark store porch is a family tradition. Chilmark is not a shopping haven--for that you have to go into the ''city,'' down-Island, but Chilmark is a local foodie haven, with many farmstands selling local produce, meat and dairy products. The vibe in Chilmark is barefoot, casual and carefree.
