Description

Description

Our house, named ''Marthie's'' is located off South Rd, just a mile into Chilmark, & at the end of Wososket Lane (native American, (Wampanog language for ''meadow'') which is a 1/3 of a mile long dead end dirt rd. At the end is a wood sign (Murray) pointing to the parking place on our land. (The house cannot be seen through the leaves from the parking place.) Another wood sign points to the house from the parking place and there is a log across part of the beginning of the ~200 foot long foot path to the house from the parking place. No one is allowed to drive down the footpath, except for emergency vehicles. There is a Garden Way cart leaning up against the house to transport heavy and/or cumbersome articles to and from the house along the footpath. The house is on 1.5 private acres with tall pines & oaks & small bushes for seclusion. The house at the end of the footpath and the middle of our land is a modified saltbox, owner designed & built with the help of friends & locals in 1978 for potential active solar. There is a south deck with 2 wood chairs & a large oak door into the very large country K with a wood ceiling, a bay window, 4 leaded glass windows, a Jotul wood stove, a large oak wooden K table and six chairs, an antique Hoosier cabinet, enamel topped cabinets, a hard pine counter, a maple butcher block counter with a wall phone, 2 stools, a white propane gas K stove, a white porcelain sink, & a white refrigerator. Off the K is a medium size LR with an open up couch, a wooden end table, 2 matching wicker/upholstered chairs (one a rocking chair), an unfinished wooden barrel from Provincetown with stained staves & hand painted metal rings by the owner, a ''coffee'' table from a W W I Liberty Ship, a wood bureau, framed pictures of ships on the walls from the owner's uncle & namesake from San Francisco, & many small framed lighthouses designed & hand painted with watercolors by the owners' 3 young daughters. Off the K is a bathroom with an antique clawfoot bathtub under an antique stained glass window of lilies in a pond, an antique hand sink mounted on a tree trunk from the land, a toilet, a w/d, & a large wooden hamper. Off the K is a door to the storage cellar. Off the K through 2 outdoor French doors is a very newly rebuilt west deck with a picnic table hand built by the owner & a propane grill on the ground. Off the K is a curved staircase to the 2nd floor with a door at the top leading to an L shaped hall with a wood ceiling, a leaded glass window, a small opening skylight, & a desk (with a phone) & chair. In the hall there are 2 bedrooms. Off the hall on the left is the smaller BR with a wood ceiling & a hand made double bed with a high quality futon mattress. Off the hall on the right is the larger BR with a half cathedral rough plaster ceiling with a stained glass semicircle window at the peak & a half wood ceiling under a sleeping loft. There is a leaded glass window facing south near the floor. There is a queen bed hand made by the owner with a high quality futon mattress, & a long wood bench. At the turn in the hall there is a ship's ladder with a hidden trap door in the ceiling leading to the 3rd level (where people can only crawl) with a small east sleeping loft with a rough plaster peaked ceiling, a double mattress on the floor, a wood screened vent, a small opening skylight, & a half door that people crawl through leading to the smaller west loft (where people can only crawl) with a rough plaster peaked ceiling, a queen futon mattress on the floor, & the 4th side overlooking the queen size bed in the larger bedroom down stairs on the 2nd floor. In all the house sleeps 8 to 10 people. The house has natural unpainted long leaf yellow pine hard wood everywhere including framing, large wood beams, oak & long leaf yellow hard pine floors & ceilings. There is also natural white rough plaster walls & peaked ceilings, 2 antique stained glass windows, 6 antique leaded glass windows, & hi speed internet. It is all supplied with natural products, including natural laundry products, natural liquid hand soaps, & natural cleaning products. There is no interior paint, no Formica, & no plastic. (As planned, there is no dishwasher and no television.) There is a newly rebuilt & enlarged outdoor, hot & cold wood 2 room shower stall (with a dressing room and a shower room) attached to the north wall of the house. The price includes cleaning. There are lower rates because of some unfinished aspects. It is a ten minute drive to the very desirable, Town of Chilmark owned Lucy Vincent Beach accessible only with a pass paid to the Town of Chilmark only for Chilmark owners & Chilmark renters. The beach is very exotic with big waves, high clay cliffs, big boulders, & at the small east end of the beach where the clay cliffs end & the warmer & calm Chilmark Pond becomes accessible is a Town of Chilmark clothing optional section (originating from the native Americans). read more show less

    Chilmark Bliss

This was the second time we were lucky enough to stay in Don and Jean's peaceful, beautiful home, and we hope to be back. This is my ideal Vineyard house: secluded, a little wild, and a little quirky. Details like the stained glass window in the main bedroom literally took my breath away, and there are lots of options to get comfortable outside. With a hammock, swing, and two decks you really don't have a reason to leave the property -- other than getting to visit Lucy Vincent Beach. :)

    Home away from home

My wife and I have been celebrating our wedding anniversary on the Vineyard for 13 years now. We've stayed a majority of those years here. We love how quiet the house and property are. Only the sounds of sheep, birds and wind through the trees. No city noise or light pollution to interrupt star gazing on either deck. The wood burning stove is nice to use on chilly fall evenings. We like the main floor laundry so we don't need to pack as many clothes. All of the rooms are spacious with plenty of storage. We use the kitchen table put together jigsaw puzzles (they have quite a few) and still have enough room for the two of us eat meals. We like that the only electronic distraction is the dining room radio. When we aren't at the house, we visit the beaches and the hiking/biking trails by the airport, both are pretty close. We have been renting this affordable home for many years and hopefully many more to come. It is one of the main reasons love coming back to the Vineyard every year. show more show less

    Hidden Gem

I have been going to the Vineyard for 20 years and have always had the privilege of enjoying Chilmark beaches. I was very disorganized last year and by the time I got around to renting, I had to try something new. I did not know what to expect but was delighted with what I found. This is a charming property with all the quarks and and rustic trappings of a Chilmark setting. I loved the way it was surrounded by nature and away from man-made noises. The place needs care as the charm comes from age. For the individual that is looking for all the wonderful aspects of getting away from the noise and pressure of the city, this property offers an opportunity to go back to a simpler time. The owners are thoughtful about sustainable living, and this is a property appropriate for a family that wants to nurture it. No, it does not have a state of the art kitchen nor an updated bathroom, but it is clean and functional and ever so charming. I always shower outside while at the Vineyard so I never pay much attention to indoor shower facilities. I recommend this property particularly for folks that care about the environment and are looking for simplicity. show more show less
