Description

Description

Enjoy dramatic sunsets over the Elizabeth Islands from the decks of this quiet 1970s contemporary house. Set on the edge of the woods, you will wake to the sound of birds and watch deer and rabbits in the evening. Rarely available because our tenants return year after year. Great house for 2-3 couples or a family of 4-6.

**If you sign a lease by December 20, we'll submit your ferry reservation with ours in the steamship authority's headstart program before the reservation system opens to the general public.**

The house has an open interior design with all levels open to the soaring, wood-beamed ceiling. Each floor has large sliding glass doors opening on to a deck and ocean breezes.

Entrance landing is between first and second floors. Go up to second floor for the kitchen, dining room, and master bedroom. The casual dining table with built-in seating on one side accommodates 10 people. It's a great spot for family meals and table top board games. Or set up your computer at one end of the table and use the other end for meals. This floor has a bathroom near the dining room, adjacent to the bedroom. It has a round stall shower.

The third floor has large living room with spectacular views of Aquinnah, Gay Head Lighthouse, and the Elizabeth Islands, both from inside and from deck. Large double glass sliding doors open to deck.

First floor has two bedrooms, full bath, and play/sitting space with sturdy modern flooring that won't be affected by wet bathing suits. Each has two twin beds which you can push together for cozier couples. These two bedrooms share a full bathroom on first floor. There is a full-size washer and dryer in the first floor bathroom. The first floor has a row of casement windows across the back, providing nice cross-ventilation when open along with deck-side sliding doors.

Enjoy WiFi internet connection and Bluetooth mini Bose speaker throughout the house. There is no TV.

Our outdoor shower is on the first floor deck. It's open to the lawn and view. Shower to the sound of birds as you look out toward the ocean. No one can see you from the driveway or inside the house.

Kitchen and meals: Our kitchen is well stocked with cooking/baking pans and utensils. In addition to an electric range and dishwasher, there is an electric tea kettle, microwave, toaster, and Cuisinart food processor. We have an electric coffee bean grinder and a Cuisinart electric drip coffee maker, two French presses, a mokka pot, and a pour-over cone. Our outdoor grill is a Weber charcoal grill. In addition to the large dining table indoors, there are lots of options for outdoor seating and meals. We love having breakfast on the deck by entrance; lunch/dinner at the outdoor table on the second floor deck, and cocktails or coffee on the third floor deck watching the sunset.

More bedroom details: The second-floor bedroom has a queen-sized bed, reading lights, dresser and spacious closets fully for your use. The adjacent bathroom has a round stall shower. Each of the two first-floor bedrooms has two twin beds, reading lamp, bedside table, dresser, and closet. Twin beds can be pushed together for cozier couples, though bed frame leaves small gap between them. Every bedroom has sliding glass doors to an outdoor deck. The layout means one couple can use second floor master bedroom and bathroom. Meanwhile, the kids or 1 or 2 other couples can have first floor bedrooms and bath to themselves. We want our guests to feel at home, so we leave the dressers and closets fully available to you. You won't be trying to live around other people's stuff.

Walk on property association's well-maintained dirt roads and trails. Walk to the hiking trails of Menemsha Hills Reservation, play tennis on the property association courts, swim at beautiful Lucy Vincent Beach (beach sticker required). The house is one mile from picturesque Menemsha fishing village.

We have two bicycles in the garage, which you may use. They are a women's mountain bike 42 cm frame and a men's hybrid 51cm frame. There are also 4 beach chairs, a basket of sand toys, and a couple of boogie boards.

    Beautiful sunsets.

Eve's house is situated in a quiet location with stunning sunsets and incredible views of the ocean and Elizabeth islands. We spent many morning and evening hours on the spacious decks. Definitely our favorite part of the house.
Quick drive to both Lucy Vincent beach and to the Chilmark store!
Perfectly placed if you like a quieter location but with easy access to the rest of the island.
Eve was the perfect host. We had all the information we could ask for before heading to the island.

    Chilmark rental

We so enjoyed Eve's home in Chilmark this summer. We were given all the information needed for a great stay, check-in and questions were easily handled, and the sunsets were spectacular. It was easy getting a pass for Lucy Vincent beach; the home was comfortable, and we loved the outdoor shower. No tv meant lots of reading and conversation. Would definitely stay again.

Private ocean views, but close to everything up-island

We discovered Eve's place when they had a last-minute cancellation, and as a result had a wonderful 10-day stay in the beautiful countryside of Chilmark, expertly guided by Eve. We would love to go back! The house is beautiful, stylish but relaxed, and perfect for a family vacation: very good value. We loved everything from the multiple balconies to the artwork and the outdoor shower. There are some beautiful walks directly from the house and bikes will take you to at least 6 or 7 beaches on both sides of the island. We also really enjoyed picking up raspberry lassi from Mermaid Farm, excellent cheese from Grey Barn, the lovely Chilmark Store and of course seafood in Menemsha (we found that Menemsha Fish Market was just as good as Larsen's but with much shorter lines). You should certainly give it a try! show more show less

    Perfect setting

We have been renting houses up island for decades and this house secured a spot in the top five in many ways. The location is ideal, very convenient to Menemsha, Chilmark Store, Lucy Vincent Beach - during this pandemic time we basically didn't travel farther than that. The property is secluded but bright and sunny with spectacular sunset views and amazing star gazing opportunities; we practically lived on the decks. We enjoyed the adjoining hiking trails and the association tennis courts which are just a 5 minute walk from the house. The kitchen is very well equipped and there's plenty of room for 6 adults. show more show less

    SummerSault Vacation

We loved our time at SummerSault! It's a beautiful setting with views of the Elizabeth Islands, Aquinnah and gorgeous sunsets. The house has an open layout with awesome decks at each level rewarding you with that gorgeous ocean view and fresh sea air. This part of the island has a laid back vibe. It's a wonderful place to rest and really regenerate. Nearby Menemsha is the place for fresh fish to cook up on the grill or in the awesome kitchen! Lucy Vincent is one of our favorite beaches, just a few short minutes away. I can't wait to come back! Thank you for letting us stay at this beautiful home!! show more show less

    Our Family Loves Summersault

We have been renting this house every summer since 1985 and have seen it admirably suit the needs of young newly weds, a young family, teens, and our own parents. We finally own our own house on Martha's Vineyard and still rent this house for two weeks every summer. It's that good!

We have recommended this house to many friends who, in turn, have become renters as have our own brothers and sisters.

The views and the sunsets are so remarkable that our daily schedule is organized around being on the deck at sunset. You can spread your arms as wide as they go and that's how wide this remarkable view extends; from Buzzards Bay, to New Bedford, Newport and all the way over to Nomans Island on the South shore. The Elizabeth Islands and Gay Head are your foreground. The Gay Head Light is your night light, and the gentle gong of the channel buoy in Menemsha is a soothing presence.

The house is surrounded by conservation land and commonly held open land. You can walk for hours on nearby trails and dirt roads with spectacular views from some of the prettiest places and remotest beaches on the Island...all within a 15 minute to half-hour walk through woods or open pasture lands.

The house is surrounded by low woods that provide privacy, but don't obscure the views. It has decks with views of the ocean on all three floors and encourages outdoor living. It is quiet....very quiet. That quiet and solitude attracts some of the people on our planet who are most in need of a private vacation. On the Island, this road is famous as that kind of private place.

The house's design allows for both large gatherings and smaller, more intimate groupings.

It is well equipped and the kitchen is a joy in which to work.

    All three bedrooms have views.

    Great vacation spot

We just had the opportunity to stay at this exceptional home. From the peaceful setting tucked in the woods (but in an open area) of Menemsha, to the fabulous views from the decks out over the trees to Aquinnah, Menemsha Pond, and the Elizabeth Islands, to the utter quiet at night, this house typifies life at the "quiet end" of the Vineyard. The location, close to Menemsha Village and Lucy Vincent Beach, and Chilmark shops, is perfect for a getaway. The house is beautiful, well-appointed, and well-maintained. I'd highly recommend it. show more show less

Our family built this vacation house in the 1970s and has rented it out for portions of the summer from the start. Now in the second generation, we welcome guests to stay during weeks we are not using the house ourselves. A couple of our renters have been returning for more than a decade. We keep the dressers and closets open for your use, so you can settle in and feel comfortable. We want you to love the house and setting as much as we do. As hosts, we are happy to provide information about the town and the island to help you enjoy your vacation.

What is special about this property?
The house is a gem of 1970s contemporary architecture. It is perfect for a family that loves the natural beauty of Chilmark. The quiet setting on the edge of the woods attracts birds, rabbits, turkeys, and deer. Dining on the deck or watching the sunset are among its special features.

What is special about your town?
Chilmark is great for quiet and retreat with tiny town center, wonderful public library, and roads through the woods. The quaint fishing village of Menemsha provides a chance to see commercial fishing boats and pleasure boats. It has a sheltered swimming beach with lifeguard. Chilmark also has 2 town beaches, including beautiful Lucy Vincent Beach on south shore where you can play in the waves and build sand castles.
