Description

Description

You can enjoy the Menemsha Sunsets from your own private deck. This summer cottage was converted from an early fishing shack in the 1900s. It is a lovely, classic island cottage. It has views of Menemsha Creek, Menemsha Harbor and Menemsha Beach. From our property you will see sailboats in Vineyard Sound, fishing boats in the Harbor, the Gay Head light, and the Elizabeth Islands. In and around the creek you will see blue herons, egrets, osprey and deer. Enjoy early morning walks to the harbor or along the beach. Spend the afternoon fishing, boating or swimming from a variety of beaches. You can end the day enjoying a dinner from the porch while watching a Menemsha sunset.

You have access to a local beach and two exclusive town beaches(for a fee): Lucy Vincent and Squibnocket. Also, you are a short walk and boat ride across the channel to Lobsterville Beach in the town of Aquinnah. This house is walking distance to restaurants, fish markets, art galleries, clothing stores and shops during the summer months. Great location! The house also has a gas fireplace for the shoulder seasons.

We also have two other houses on the property for rent. Please see our property number 18146 suitable for 1 or 2 people and property number 17189 suitable for 4 people.

Judging a book by its cover

If this house suggests a REAL vacation away from every day routines and stresses of life in the 21st century, you have guessed correctly. And it only gets better inside where the charm of a more simpler time takes hold. You cannot help but be stopped at every window stunned at yet another perspective of the marsh as the tides come and go - the ocean in the distance; or of the 5 or 6 weathered grey buildings in the village - its 2 simple fish markets set off by red or blue doors. Add the ever present bird sound that slowly penetrates while stunning white egrets fish in the bold green grasses...It was hard not to sit on the porch all day drawn in for hours by the natural routines around you. I came here to feel Martha's Vineyard and found I entered a story book existence.
Treat yourself to the experience here. The warm hospitality of Barbara and John only adds to knowing you are completely taken care of as the peace all around you subtly sinks in.

    Perfect Location in Menemsha

Our family has rented the Sunset Camp for at least some portion of every year, since my now-adult children were toddlers. The rooms are large and comfortable and the charmingly rustic interior belies the fact that all conveniences, like washer/dryer, modern stove, cookware, linens, etc. are included. One feature, the outdoor shower, which is common to many Island homes, is a favorite of ours because the view makes getting out of the shower a total delight.

The major feature, however, is the unbeatable location. While situated right in the heart of Menemsha, it’s surrounded on three sides by marsh, making it feel part of a separate world, populated only by egrets, other equally picturesque birds, and, perhaps the occasional deer. As the name implies, the Sunset Camp does have a glorious view of Menemsha’s famous sunsets. It’s always fun to enjoy that view from the porch while crowds on the beach, far in front, are jostling to get parking and beach spots to do so. Guests love to come for dinner on that porch!

The owners are and have always been terrific to work with. Barbara and her husband, John are always responsive to the needs of their renters. Barbara goes beyond just addressing complaints and questions; she often solicits suggestions for improvements.

I have only qualm about rating this as excellent in every way: I don’t want more competition!

My grandparents bought this property in the1930s and began their rental business by renting rooms in their home. My great grandfather, grandfather and father were commercial fisherman who fished from Menemsha Harbor. My great grandfather was a trap fisherman, my grandfather a lobsterman and my father a sword-fisherman and a dragger-man. My grandmother moved here from Scotland and cleaned houses and made beach plum jelly to earn money. She also spearheaded the purchase of two of the fish shacks on the property that were turned into rental houses. We are the third generation to welcome guests to Menemsha and some guests that new my grandparents are now bringing their grandchildren.

My great grandfather, William Tilton, lived in the Tilton House for many years until his death.

What is special about this property?
We are a stone's throw from the harbor and a short walk to the beach. Menemsha is a popular place to see the sunset and there is limited parking for people but, no worries, you don't need your car.
