    Martha's Vineyard Magic

We’ve stayed at Snow's Point, a fabulous Chappaquiddick house many times. It’s the perfect rambling summer house, with enough room for a large extended family and it generates its own special kind of magic. There’s a sense of calm and serenity, the setting is beautiful, the grounds well thought-out, well- tended and integrated with Vineyard flora.

One of our most favorite things is having dinner at the big round table in the kitchen—It’s the essence of casual coziness. There’s a Lazy Susan in the middle of the table and it makes serving easy and great fun for the kids (and for the parents and grandparents).

And, having a beach of one own just minutes away is extraordinary.

Every time we leave we have to promise ourselves and our family that we’ll come back again. It’s the kind of place that turns a visit into a family tradition.

Old Martha's Vineyard at its Very Best

If you want to savour life on the Vineyard of 60 years ago, before the flash and the lines, this classic summer house is for you. With three differences from the past: the appliances work, the beds are comfortable, and the WiFi's strong. The view across the harbor of Edgartown is 180 degrees and spectacular. The peregrine falcons hunting across the view provide hours of entertainment. Noise and traffic aren't issues, since the house is more than a mile off the nearest paved road. Inside, the house is roomy, has plenty of space and privacy, is well appointed. With lots of yard, it's ideal for kids. The small guest house is lovely, just the place for a couple who wants to be away from it all. Since it's a family home (with quirks and character), it's had loving care, and it feels that way. The owners are nearby and are quite attentive to renter needs. Just love the place! show more show less

    Classic Chappy

There are lots of beautiful places to rent for a vacation, but it's rare to find a place that has the patina of loving care found at Snow's Point "Big House." Well worn floors (many that have been painted and re-painted) and lovingly tended flower and vegetable gardens, beautiful linens in every room, collections of dishes and quilts and treasures from all over the world, and romantic, unpretentious furnishings, all tell me that I'm very lucky to get to experience this classic, vintage place that holds restorative memories for the generations that have cared for this property. There are so many spots to relax and enjoy the views that I've had to be intentional about getting around to every one! Writing from the back porch surrounded by its birdhouse collection and view of the small, stone-walled garden, I know that I COULD be sitting on the small front porch by myself or out on the grassy slope with friends watching the sunset over the sailboats moored on Katama Bay. And if it were chilly we could sit in the cozy living room and still see the sunset or gather around the wood stove off the kitchen. OR I could get away from everyone and go out to the cabin where we stayed this visit and sit on its front porch. The guest cabin is new but very charming with an open beamed ceiling and a welcoming fragrance of pine. The iron bed and pink and white quilts make me want to snuggle in and read. I'm finding it hard to tear myself away from this beautiful retreat to go out and enjoy all of the fun in Edgartown and out on the beach. But now I'm going to the rambling country kitchen overlooking the bay (that has every pot or pan I'll ever need) and make a fabulous dinner with my friends. show more show less

    Idyllic Vineyard Home

We were thrilled with the week we spent at Snow's Point. This is a spacious and historic home located in one of the most scenic spots on Chappaquidick. We love boating and fishing and did plenty. The shared dock is brand new and very sturdy. We moored our larger boat in Edgartown Harbor and used our dinghy to get to town and to our boat. The lawn alone is worth a mention as there is at least an acre of lawn which meant our kids could play baseball and frisbee.

The owner is among the great things about the home. She allows renters to use the sunfish and kayaks, which means you don't have to simply watch others sail in Katama Bay and the harbor but you can join in. The kitchen is packed with ample dishes, glasses, pots and decent knives. (I.e. not your normal rental!)

The kitchen has a nice big round table with plenty of seating (12+?) and a lazy susan in the middle. The decor is classic beach house and not so fancy that you are afraid to sit down. The decorations include countless old maps of the Vineyard and interesting photos from days gone by. There are plenty of bedrooms from which to choose.

We can't wait to plan another trip there.

The photos and description do not exaggerate. Located quietly away from the Vineyard summer crowds on Katama, looking across to Edgartown, this is a classic late 19th century seaside house, a relaxed collection of rooms, each with its own distinct character, filled with light, sea air and ocean views. A little gem of a guest house was added last year. Your own beach with good swimming or fishing is 100 feet away and some of the most unspoiled open ocean beaches on the east coast are within a mile or so. Katama Bay is sufficiently protected for great small boat sailing or kayaking and, unexpectedly, there's a beautiful Japanese garden nearby (maintained in part by the owner of the rental) that we visited twice. The house is private, at the end of a long driveway, but just a mile from the short ferry crossing to Edgartown. It's very convenient to leave your car in the ferry parking lot, cross on foot and walk around Edgartown without the hassle of a car and parking.

All the expected amenities are included, clean and well-maintained. The owners are great. And yes, we'll be going back.

We have always loved the Vineyard, but staying at the Allison house on Chappaquidick was even better than we had imagined. The house is big enough for a large family, yet has a coziness and warmth that's instantly welcoming. We all loved sharing our meals in the generous kitchen, watching the parade of boats go by, having drinks outside as the sun went down. The master bedroom was perfect for us, our daughter and husband loved the "red room" and our grandchildren, and friends they brought with them, were thrilled to have the "dormitory" all to themselves. And the brand new guest house (I think we may have been the first to use it) is a boon for friends who want to get away from the family hubble-bubble in the big house. The combination of rambling beach house, lovely grounds, wonderful views of the water makes it feel like the essence of summer. We can't wait to go back next July. show more show less

Staying for five days in the lovely beach house on Chappaquiddick was a dream!! Beautiful weather, long beach walks, ferry rides to Edgartown, quiet time in My Toi Garden, sunsets at Menemsha! All perfect. So perfect, in fact, that I returned in September of the same year and did it all over again.

This "big house" is a terrific place for large family gatherings - enormous kitchen with two big tables that will accommodate 20 people. Plenty of room to spread out.

There is also a separate "outside" bedroom cottage.

The smaller house nearby is also a perfect place for a smaller gathering.

Both houses have spectacular views of Katama Bay and beach access.

Lots to do or do nothing at all!! It's all magical and makes for an unforgettable vacation experience!!

I grew up on Chappaquiddick in the summers, as my family bought the property in 1929! Over the years we have made many improvements, but always trying to keep the feel of an authentic Chappy summer house. When we are not using the Big House we make it available for rental but it is not a usual rental property but rather a home. When the house is rented I stay next door at another house we own, so I am available to water the gardens and make sure that everything goes smoothly for our tenants. Many of our tenants, over the years, have ended up buying a house on Chappaquiddick as they come to love it as much as my family does!

What is special about this property?
Privacy and views make the Big House at Snow's Point very special! There are expansive views from Edgartown Harbor all the way to Wasque and Norton's Point at the end of the bay. Our beach is sandy, which is unusual for Katama Bay, and is also great for fishing. A few years ago we built an association dock. Acres of lawn, dotted with gardens, surround the house, making it ideal for large groups to play bocce or croquet. We built a vegetable garden as few years ago on an old tennis court and together with Slip Away Farm's farm stand we always have fresh vegetables and flowers. Almost all the rooms have water views and we love to sit and watch the sun set across the bay. Birdwatching....osprey, skimmers, egrets and heron is fascinating, too!

What is special about your town?
Chappaquiddick offers some of the East Coast's best beaches. We love driving over the sand out to Cape Pogue lighthouse for a swim. Mytoi Garden, where I have worked for 40+ years, is a great place to take kids to see the goldfish and the turtles, as well as to enjoy a Japanese style garden on this remote island. But, town is just about 2 mies away and we often park the car on the Chappy side and take the On Time ferry into town for dinner and shopping. Most summers there is a little Chappy store where you can buy essentials and the newspapers. And,the Chappy Kitchen will deliver dinner, if you aren't in the mood to cook in our well equipped kitchen.
