Description

Description

Consider Holidays on the Cape! Caroling and a Holiday Stroll in in Woods Hole; Santa arrives by boat in Falmouth!

This sunny, winterized summer cottage is a five-minute walk to the Village and highlights a vaulted open-plan living area with a fireplace and kitchen/dining area opening to a peaceful deck overlooking the Mill Pond.

Entered through a covered porch on the second level, the main floor also features three bedrooms (two with queen beds and one single) and a full bath. There is also a sofabed in the living area. The unfinished ground level, accessed from the lawn, has a washer and dryer as well as a bathroom with shower.

It's a quick three-block walk to the village of Woods Hole for groceries, morning coffee, drinks or dinner, or exploring the area on foot or by bike. When you come back from the beach, walking, or biking, there is an outdoor shower and room on the lawn to sunbathe in privacy, play croquet or lawn games, or relax on the deck listening to the birds, the church bells, and the ferry horn.

Places To Go and Things to Do:

Woods Hole is a true small town with a year-round population centered on marine science and anchored by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. The village is enlivened by the ferry-goers to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, and by its access to the water: boats docked in Eel Pond with a drawbridge that rises to provide access to the ocean; a sandy beach; and in our case a pond.

Hyperlocal
Beach: Stony Beach is a two-minute walk right around the corner.
Playground: The town ballfield and playground can be seen across the pond, and is about a 5 minute walk. It has tennis courts, a volleyball net, and a large play structure as well as a baseball diamond.

In the Village
Food:
Pie in the Sky, the iconic Woods Hole bakery that has served residents and ferry-travellers alike for over 40 years, is about a 10 minute walk. It is open from 5 am to 10 pm daily, serving coffee, pastries, soups, sandwiches, smoothies and much else. Coffee Obsession is another terrific local coffee spot, with slightly more limited hours (7-3 Monday-Saturday). For last-minute groceries and snacks, the Woods Hole Market and General Store is open Wednesdays-Saturdays 8-6. There are several other great restaurants here.

Activities:
There is a lot to do in and around Woods Hole; an excellent overview of all that the area offers can be found at the website for Woodshole. Three activities stand out:

The Shining Sea Bikeway, which starts in town and weaves along and away from the shore, is ideal for walkers and bikers alike, with beautiful beaches and views of Martha’s Vineyard and the Aquinnah Cliffs.

For all things oceanographic, start at the WHOI Marine Science Discovery Center and continue to the Woods Hole Science Aquarium.

Take a day trip to the Islands: Woods Hole is known to many visitors primarily as the embarkation point for the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket. You are a short walk from the ferry, with no parking worries, so make a day of it or just enjoy a round trip.

wonderful long weekend at Mill Pond

Mill Pond was perfect for our family: the cottage is just lovely; the sitting area and dining room felt spacious with lots of room for family hangout and games; bedrooms comfortable and easily accommodated our family of 4. We loved the outdoor deck overlooking the pond where we spent every morning and early evening. The location couldn't be better for walking to the beach, into town and biking easily to the bike path. We appreciated the beach chairs, towels. Alison was accessible, gracious, and easy to communicate with. We're eager to return! show more show less

    Great Location

The house is set in a wonderful spot - 2-3 min walking from a lovely beach and within a few minutes walking distance to Woods Hole. We also were able to bike straight from the house to the Shining Sea Bikepath. It was wonderful to be able to get everywhere we wanted to without relying on a car. The house has a wonderful patio overlooking the porch. The living area is wonderful too - spacious with windows all the way around, so there is a nice breeze. Alison was extremely accommodating and very responsive. We hope to come back again. show more show less

We loved Woods Hole, and we love this house! I'll start by listing what was most important to us: walkability, proximity to the beach, and some classic Cape Cod charm. This hits all three. Alison was a great host, and made sure we felt at home with recommendations and quick problem solving. We especially appreciated having beach chairs and beach towels to take down to the beach with us.

Wonderful Stay at Mill Pond Cottage

We really enjoyed Mill Pond Cottage. The location was amazing! We walked to almost everything. Beautiful sunsets, swimming and paddle boarding were highlights of Stoney Beach just a couple minutes walk from the cottage. The WHOI Campus and public offerings were wonderful. We even got to ride the Shining Sea Bike Path and took the ferry to Martha's Vineyard for a day! The features other than location we enjoyed most were the Great Room and window views, Cape Cod Games and books, the outdoor shower, fully equipped kitchen, the beach gear and yard games available for our use! Our host had great communication with us leading up to our stay and provided great information about the house! show more show less

This house has been our family for over 50 years; I believe that there were only two other owners before our late brother, a local doctor, bought it in the 1970's. We love Woods Hole and are delighted to share this beautiful location with others.

What is special about this property?
The house is exceptionally sunny, with banks of windows on three sides in the living/dining area; it is slightly offset from the neighboring houses, so the view focuses on the pond and wooded land beyond. The kitchen, dining and living areas are open to each other but separate enough to be functional, and the deck is quiet and peaceful, surprisingly removed from any road sounds or walkers passing by on the way to the beach.

What is special about your town?
Woods Hole is a true small-town community with a strong year-round presence, particularly of scientists affiliated with the MBL and WHOI. While the ferry-goers bring a festive aura, especially in the summer months, the town is its own community and not primarily focused on tourists, although it does have its share of summer residents. The house is a very short walk both to the beach and to the coffee shops and restaurants in town, as well as the various activities available there, and to the Shining Sea bikeway and other biking options.
