Description

Description

Formerly an artist and writers studio, converted by the artist into fully heated, year round charming one bedroom house. Upstairs you'll find a queen size bed in a room that feels like it's up in the trees, with 20 windows looking into the upper level of the surrounding oaks and pines. Bedside tables and lamps, bureau, large closet, ceiling fan, floor to ceiling curtains and all cotton linens complete the feeling of serenity that you'll experience in the bedroom. Down comforters are available if the nights get chilly.

Downstairs is a large open living space with living, dining and kitchen areas, and a full bathroom with shower. The many south facing windows and the cathedral ceiling give the room a light and airy feel. Stereo system with CD, TV, VCR and DVD player, comfortable double futon sofa, all modern kitchen utensils and appliances making living easy. You can even check your email with the high speed internet connection. Go out the front door onto the terrace surrounded by flower gardens with your morning cup of coffee or tea and sit at the cafe table while the chickadees and hummingbirds make their early visits to the feeders.

Walk up the path through the woods to the parking area and wander down the sandy road to the nearest freshwater pond, an easy 10 minute walk. Or venture into the village center, only a mile in the other direction for muffins and fabulous omlettes at the Wicked Oyster or clam chowder at the Tavern or Bookstore Restaurant, visit some of the many art galleries that Wellfleet is known for, take in a show at the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater (WHAT), rent a sailboat or play tennis at the harbor, play golf at the seaside country club or just set up your chair on a beach and relax with a good book.

There's a special early season quality to Wellfleet in the Spring. Many businesses are newly open after the long winter, the ponds, bay and ocean, while still too chilly to swim in for most, are lovely for a sunny day's hike. Or take a kayak or canoe out for an exploration. The ocean and bay beaches are largely empty, there are no waits at the golf course, tennis courts, movie theater, restaurants and the weather is perfect for bike rides and long rambles.

The studio cottage is a great place for retreat and renewal and who among us isn't in need of a bit of this after the long winter?

    About Susan Weegar

We are a couple who have lived in Wellfleet for the past 28 years. We raised our son, Ben, here and he now lives in another town on the Cape with his young and growing family. We are not retired but certainly are of an age where we could be. Brent is a writer and artist. He continues a decades long bi-monthly column for the Cape Cod Times. I, (Susan) am a clinical social worker and former sign language interpreter. My small private practice is suspended in the age of COVID19. Gardening, grandchildren, and social activism take up much of my time. We built our house and the several out-buildings on our property. The house was designed by Brent as a small passive solar cottage which we built when we lived in Hartford, CT. It was subsequently enlarged when we moved to Wellfleet in 1992. The Studio Cottage is near the house and houses guests when we are in town. We now spend 4 months in the winter in our modest home in Tucson AZ. Our life has also included travels to France, Spain, Mexico, Cuba, Vieques/Puerto Rico, and much of the USA. Between us we are somewhat conversant in Spanish, Brent has a bit of German and I am fairly good in French and ASL.

What is special about this property?
Our house is truly unique, as is the property as a whole. There are brick floors throughout the main living area, natural wood ceilings, a large sunspace that we call the greenhouse with shaded overhead windows, and 8 foot high sliders on 3 sides. The fourth side opens to the main living space with antique pocket windows and french doors.
The location is wonderful. It's remote and close at the same time. Walk to the village center in about 20 minutes. Walk to ponds in 15-30 minutes (depending on the pond) and ocean beaches are a 5-10 minute drive. The busy and often crowded town center with shops, restaurants and event venues is a world away from the peace and quiet of our property, where birdsong and, occasionally, ocean surf are the loudest sounds you'll hear.,

What is special about your town?
Wellfleet is a gem among gems on the Outer Cape. With a vibrant town center, an active fishing and boating harbor with clams and oysters for all who have a license to pick, National Seashore beaches, and many fresh water ponds (with white sandy bottoms) the opportunities for water activities in Wellfleet are many and varied. Our restaurants are well reviewed, our performance spaces and art galleries are highly regarded, golf and tennis are close at hand and if you're itching to see more of Cape Cod you are only 20 minutes from downtown Provincetown where there is always lots going on.
