Description

If ocean views, breezes and sounds are what you love... stay here. The ocean is omnipresent. Every room has an incredible view. An abundance of windows gives the cottage a light and airy feel. Cooking in the kitchen, reading on the deck(s), or even working in the office is a tranquil pleasure with the waves in the distance.

The cottage is dog-friendly and relatively secluded, located in a small community of homes on Wellfleet's ''backside,'' which is the locals' term for the ocean side. The community maintains a beach access stairway down the dune cliff to the semi-private beach (located in between the public access beaches 1/2 mile to the north and south). Only a handful of homes are visible from the cottage, and the overall sense is one of serenity and calm.

The cottage lies within the Cape Cod National Seashore (CCNS), the creation of which stopped new real estate development in 1963. Consequently, the area is a preserved natural gem. It is only a short walk down the road to one of the most beautiful beaches on Cape Cod, and you're also right across the street from incredible hiking trails through the CCNS. Nestled among the scrub pines and rose bushes, the house sits up on the hill overlooking the ocean.

The house is recently rebuilt (2016) in the style of the original 1905 cottage and consists of a master bedroom with king bed, an office bedroom with two twin beds, and a guest bedroom with a queen bed---all rooms have great views. There are two full bathrooms (one with a lovely cast iron soaking tub). There's a full two-sink kitchen with professional-grade gas range, living room, dining area (all with expansive ocean views), large deck, enclosed outdoor shower, 2nd floor deck, front porch and lovely yard with picnic area - again all with views. The floors are rough hewn cherry hardwood, and walls predominately pine barn siding. It's cozy and warm, particularly when the in-floor radiant heating system is operating (winter rentals only! :-)

Wake up to a sunrise over the water and have dinner watching the sunset over the forest. If you are lucky, you may see whales breaching from the deck as you eat. Every night the sound of the waves puts you to sleep. Ride a bike to The Blue Willow or PB Boulangerie to get fresh baked goods, then work off those calories boogie boarding, surfing or hiking. The Cape Cod Rail Trail (CCRT) is only 1 mile away. Have an afternoon nap on the deck overlooking the ocean, or perhaps on the beach. Or a hike through the woods takes you to one of Wellfleet's famous freshwater kettle ponds for a refreshing dip before dinner!

I am an engineer who loves the ocean and living in its midst. This home exemplifies what I like: a simple, quiet existence with a view, smell and sound of the sea. Whether it's a sunny summer day, or a raging Nor'easter, this is where I want to be.

I intend to retire in this house and, until I can manage that, I'm renting it out so that others can enjoy this incredible seaside cottage.

What is special about this property?
This cottage is newly rebuilt (2016) in the spirit of the original cottage (1905) that was first built just to the south at a site near the Marconi wireless experiments, and was moved here a few months later, becoming the first home on Ocean View Drive. This little spot has seen a lot over the years.

It is located overlooking a hollow to the sea, and the panoramic view of the ocean is wonderful. One can hear and see the shore break, as well as whales playing as they migrate. At night the quiet of the woods is calming, and starry nights are serene.

What is special about your town?
Wellfleet is a special place, and its ''backside'' (the ocean side) is spectacular. Its remote, barren beaches bear the brunt of the worst Nor'easters the Atlantic can conjure, and yet its summer seas are gentle and refreshing. Everyday the ocean and sky paint a new backdrop within which seals and seabirds frolic daily. The winds are always fresh, and the ocean's surf is always heard. The pitch pine forests are pin drop quiet, and wonderful for daily hikes. The town's roads are not too crowded (avoid Rt. 6!) and well suited for cycling as well.
