This is a perfect home for families, travelers with pets and for families looking to do a little work from home. The house has a great feel inside and has a lot of useful space outside. There is a large, fully fenced-in, dog-proof yard with gardens and a fire pit. It is a short walk from the house to a private sandy beach on a fresh water pond. Access to the bike path is a safe and easy ride just around the corner. The house is in a very convenient neighborhood in the quintessential Cape Cod town of Chatham.
To help promote a great family vacation a house needs two things. First, a vacation home needs to have rooms and gathering spaces that facilitate quality time together. And second, a vacation house needs space and privacy for some relaxing downtime. This house provides both. The bedrooms are comfortable and are buffered from the main living area, while the shared living space provides intimate and diverse settings for gathering as a family or for spreading out for quiet reflection.
The House
The kitchen is newly renovated and well stocked; It has new appliances, including a gas range and oven. Adjacent to the kitchen is a breakfast counter with barstool seating. The dining room has French doors opening onto a fully furnished deck with a gas grill. The living room has plenty of seating and a large flat screen TV. High speed internet is available via WIFI throughout the house.
The master bedroom is on the first floor and is separated from the main living area with a front hall and entrance area; it has a king bed, full bathroom with laundry, and large sitting area with vaulted ceilings and skylights. From this sitting area, French doors open onto the deck and gardens. The second floor has two bedrooms and one full bathroom. The upstairs bedrooms are large and bright, each has two skylights. One bedroom has a queen bed; the other has a pair of twin beds. There are three separate desks/workstations; in the master bedroom, in an upstairs bedroom and in the den. There is a futon couch in the den on the first floor.
The Yard
The yard, with its Cape Cod style landscaping and gardens, is secluded and quiet. The backyard has a deck, patio, and a fire pit. A full-perimeter fence in the backyard is large enough for the dogs, or the kids, to stretch their legs safely. The fully furnished deck, overlooking the backyard and gardens, is south facing and is a great place to grill and share a meal, or to lay out and soak up the sun. Also, in the backyard there is an outside shower for rinsing off the salt after a swim in the ocean and a rope hammock for sneaking in an afternoon nap. There is a stone ring fire pit tucked into the back gardens. The gardens are the result of decades-long evolutions. Originally, the main focus of the garden was organic vegetables, with eelgrass harvested from Hardings beach being a primary fertilizer. Currently, the gardens emphasize ornamentals, flowers and an herb garden. (Feel free to freshen up your favorite dish with some parsley or a sprig of lemon thyme.) On the west side of the house there is a furnished brick patio. The patio is a cool and clear place for a morning coffee and later in the day the patio catches the warm light of the afternoon sun.
The Neighborhood
The house is in a very convenient and quiet residential neighborhood. The neighborhood is easy to get to and affords some great attractions all within short walking distance, with more great attractions being just a short drive away.
Walk from the house five minutes through Chatham Conservation land to a private sandy beach on a fresh water pond (called a “kettle pond,” Schoolhouse pond was formed by receding glacier during the last ice age). Walk five minutes to the Hangar B restaurant for breakfast and to watch planes take off and land (while there, book a flight seeing tour and witness the beauty of Cape Cod from above). Walk five minutes or ride one minute to access the Cape Cod Rail Trail. The paved bike/jogging path is built on a repurposed railway that was first built to bring summer vacationers to Chatham more than a century ago. It is part of an extensive network of bike paths that cover the entire Cape. From the house it is a short bike ride to the playground and ballfields of Volunteer Park and to Schoolhouse Ice Cream Store; head a little further in the other direction to get to downtown Chatham. In the car it is a short drive to Harding’s beach, downtown Chatham shops and restaurants, Stop & Shop for groceries, or to the Corner Store for a delicious burrito.
