Where: Seaview Avenue, Oak Bluffs View Map
Water Type: Salt water
Type: Calm
Good for: Anyone, especially young kids
One of the most popular beaches on the Island, State Beach is particularly attractive to families with young kids due to the fairly easy, free parking, warm quiet waters, and sandy, shallow waters. The beach runs along Beach Road between Edgartown and Oak Bluffs and was the setting for most of the beach scenes in the movie "Jaws." Some concessions available seasonally.

This beach has very little surf and is perfect for kids. Early in the morning or late afternoon are the best times to get parking.

Arrive before 10 am for plenty of parking. The beach has gentle waves and beautiful sand. Great for little ones learning to swim and meets the needs for others wanting to fly a kite, soak in some sun or swim in the ocean.

I have few favorites, but State Beach offers the boardwalk for people watching and I enjoy bike path from Oak Bluffs to Edgartown.

State beach has convenient parking and expansive sand/beach area so you don't feel like you are on top of each other.

We arrived each morning at 10AM and were one of the first there and could park where we wanted. July 4th week on the Vineyard and we had no problems getting parking, any spot we wanted, and very family friendly.

We enjoyed State Beach with our family. We left the house [Vacation Rental ID 26587] early so we got parking spaces very easily. We hauled our coolers, umbrellas, and chairs down a short sandy path and set up shop. The water is safe for everyone here; no rip tides or huge waves. Sometimes there are jellyfish, but not this time. There are bridges that the bigger kids can jump off of, which tires them out for a good nights sleep! So memorable, we love State Beach!

Nice long beach. Parking not too terribly difficult. There is very little surf, so good for the kids. The water is still so fresh & clean. You can find nice seashells if you search.

We love the J. Sylvia State Beach, this is closer to Oak Bluff and to the ferry and very convenient to get to everyday or if we want to make the most of the last day enjoying the beach and then board the ferry. Then we also love the Katama South Beach in Edgartown as it has more waves and dunes and is easily accessible by a cab ride.

Park right after the first bridge and you have a short walk. Never crowded and fewer rocks!
