Estero, the small, unincorporated region of Southwest Florida between Bonita Springs and Fort Myers, has a vast history involving Native Americans, a religious commune and even pirates. But Estero only recently started to become a true destination for tourism. And it only took a matter of years for it to be discovered.
Today, Estero is home to some of the finest golf communities in Southwest Florida. The main attraction here is that there are not a lot of attractions! It offers a quiet and gently paced lifestyle yet is close to other Southwest Florida communities which offer everything you might want to experience on your vacation.
One of the more peaceful pastimes is enjoying canoeing or kayaking on the Estero River, which winds gently westward from the town through unspoiled surroundings. Birders and naturalists enjoy many sightings along the way of osprey, hawks, eagles, great blue herons, otters and other wildlife. Not far from the mouth of the Estero River is Mound Key State Park, which is actually an Indian shell mound with hiking trails and spectacular views. The Koreshan State Historic Site, home in the 1890s to a small religious sect, is located on the banks of the Estero River and has restored buildings and gardens open to the public and which are the site for annual festivals.
The new Coconut Point Mall promises upscale dining and shopping venues and the Miromar Outlet Mallis one of the biggest outlet malls in the area.
Visitors to Estero make the short drive to the Gulf coast beaches of Bonita Beach or Fort Myers Beach.
Round out your vacation with a visit to Naples, just a short drive to the south, or Fort Myers to the north.
