Naples is the considered by many to be the crown jewel of Southwest Florida. In fact, the Naples area has been nicknamed “The Paradise Coast” for a variety of reasons, least of which are its beautiful, white sand beaches. Here you can have it all from attending sophisticated cultural activities to visiting natural habitats with an abundance of bird and wildlife.
Naples is well known for its superb golfing, shopping and dining, but perhaps its greatest lure are the beautiful, uncrowded beaches from Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park to the Naples Pier and the municipal beaches along Gulfshore Boulevard. Crystal blue waters, warm white sugar sands, shells brought in on the tide to become treasures, and magnificent sunsets are perfect antidotes for hectic lifestyles back home. And, since Naples’ climate is subtropical it is enjoyable any time of year. Families and couples alike can find suitable vacation rental homes and condos in all price ranges.
With some 90 golf courses, Naples has one of the highest ratio of golf courses to golfers in the USA, many open to the public, with the majority available to residents and tenants of a golfing community. Regardless of your handicap, you can find a course that is suitable and enjoyable. Tennis enthusiasts find equally high standards of play here, and many residential complexes offer tennis courts as part of their amenities. Many highly rated invitation golf and tennis tournaments are held in Naples each year.
Treat yourself a bounty of local seafood and a spectacular sunset at one of Naples’ many casual waterfront eateries. Or, try award winning cuisine in sublime surroundings. Shopping in Naples is another treat, with a spectacular selection of small boutiques and shops at Third Street South, Fifth Avenue South, Tin City and Venetian Village, as well as large, nationally known stores at Coastland Center Mall and Waterside Shops. You can find just about anything in Naples!
If it's culture you're after, spend an evening at the Philharmonic Center for the Arts, Sugden Theater or one of the fine local theaters. Art galleries abound in this cosmopolitan town – in fact with over 130 galleries in Greater Naples, the region is definitely on the map as a cultural destination. Free art and cultural events are held throughout the year such as art festivals on Fifth Avenue South, free concerts in Cambier Park and the annual Taste of Naples.
There is so much to do and see in Naples, but you’ll have to squeeze in time to visit the many natural attractions to be found. Collier County, of which Naples is the county seat, is the largest county in the state of Florida by land area, yet more than 75% of the vast expanse of land is preserved as park and nature preserve land by federal, state, county, city and private agencies. In all, some 30 beach preserves and parks are here for your enjoyment. The Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, Conservancy of Southwest Florida, Caribbean Gardens: The ZOO in Naples, Everglades National Park and many other parks, trails and centers, are lush with rare species of flora and fauna indigenous to the state, along with exotic birds, insects, mammals and even the American Alligator. Naples also offers several interesting historic sites and the Collier County Museum should be your first stop to find out about early settlers and Naples evolution to a world class vacation destination.
Boating is another favored recreational activity, as is fishing. Southwest Florida is home to some of the best fishing in the state. The natural environment of the Florida Gulf, and fish rich areas such as the Ten Thousand Islands, rank highly with fishermen who enjoy deep sea angling, as well as inshore fly fishing. The artificial reefs and natural ledges in the Gulf of Mexico provide homes to the big snook, redfish, trout and tarpon that fishermen are hoping to find. Both inshore and offshore guides are available.
Professional sports is well represented here with the Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins holding spring training camp in nearby Fort Myers and the Florida Everblades hockey team’s home ice located at Germaine Arena in Estero. Gambling enthusiasts will find a casino run by the Seminole Indian tribe in Immokalee, fun boats with gaming departing from Ft. Myers Beach and the Naples/Fort Myers Greyhound Track offering greyhound racing, full card simulcasting of dog and thoroughbred races, and poker. Don’t miss the Swamp Buggy Races held three times each year at the Florida Sports Park in East Naples.
